What will the opera of tomorrow sound like? Three Swedish composers present three new short operas based on real events. My Turn Is Now is a fast-paced story about billionaires, tax evasion and choosing between money and love. Taro is based on a Japanese tale about a poor fisherboy who discovers a kingdom in the sea. When he returns after 100 years, everything that has meant something to him is gone. When Buds Burst is a free dramatization of the poems of Karin Boye. It follows Karin Boye to Berlin where she is to undergo psychoanalysis in order to »recover« from her homosexuality.
After critically acclaimed successes in 2016 and 2020, the Royal Swedish Opera returns with Short Stories III – a tailormade concept that promotes new Swedish opera by offering composers and librettists an opportunity to write for the opera stage. Short Stories III invites three contemporary composers who get to test their ideas in the small format: Maria Lithell Flyg, Torbjörn Helander and Jonas Valfridsson.
